About Matt - Photography

The stunning guidebook photos can be purchased as fine-art prints.
Matt first became interested in photography as a river guide on Idaho’s famed Middle Fork of the Salmon River. He wanted to create images in order capture and convey the beauty of the central Idaho wilderness. A trip to Patagonia in 1998 spurred his first purchase of an SLR camera. Four years later his first book, a collection of photographs and essays on the Middle Fork called Impassable Canyon was released.

Photography is an important part of the Idaho River Publications guidebooks. The full-color printing showcases the stunning imagery. Matt takes a camera on all of his research hikes and adventures and captures images from some very unique vantage points. The photographs offer his readers a sense of place and provide a better understanding of the landscape. The images also serve another purpose, as teasers that hopefully inspire people to get outside.

In addition to writing and publishing guidebooks, Matt works as a freelance photographer. His photographs have been published in many national and local magazines including National Geographic Adventure, Travel and Leisure, Backpacker, Backcountry, Powder, Sun Valley Guide, Sun Valley Magazine, and the Black Diamond Catalog. All of the images in the guidebooks are available for purchase as fine art prints.
